On the morning of July 23, 1966, an explosion tore through an area of the Mount Hope Siltix Mine being operated by the New River Company. Caused by the ignition of built-up methane gas, the blast killed seven men and wounded two others who were in the immediate area. Despite massive collapses, thirty-nine other miners working at the time escaped the mine unharmed.
