The Croton Dam Mound Group near Croton, Michigan, preserves an archaeological ceremonial area covering about 2.3 acres and dating to the Early Woodland period. The site includes three earthen mounds, Croton Dam A, B, and C. The largest mound, about 35 feet across, yielded a cache of animal bones and weapon points, while the two smaller mounds contained red ochre and cremated human remains. These discoveries indicate ceremonial and mortuary use rather than everyday settlement. The site is important for what it reveals about prehistoric life in the lower Muskegon River region and for its protected recognition as a historic archaeological site.
