Sodus Outer Light marks the entrance from Lake Ontario into Sodus Bay, New York, standing at the end of the western pier that helps define the channel. First established in 1858, it guided vessels at the bay’s outer approach where open lake water narrows into the harbor entrance. The original wood tower was replaced in 1938 by the present cast-iron tower, when the light was also converted from kerosene to electricity. Its importance lies in its continuing practical function as an aid to navigation and in how the current structure reflects the early 20th-century modernization of working harbor lights while preserving a long-established site.
