The memorial honors the men and women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and remembers Merrimack's war dead: Reuben Cummings of the Revolutionary War; Horace B. Corning, Courtland Follansbee, Edward A. Downs, George B. Longa, Rufus Merriam, and Henry C. Patrick of the Civil War; James H. Ferguson and Gilbert D. Fraser of World War I; Kenneth Berry, Therrien Cox, Roger Gerard, Phillip Heath, Harry Parker, Bernard Read, and Weston Warriner of World War II; and Richard N. Rivard of the Vietnam War.
