In 1888, Lt. Col. William Edwin Cadman of Yorkshire, England, came to Narcoossee to investigate a potential investment property that included a home and citrus grove, and several family members, including his wife Jane, joined him. Jane was shocked to see Seminoles at the dock and nearly sent the family straight back to England, but the Cadmans ultimately settled in Narcoossee and quickly became part of the local community, many of whom were also English. Their experience was typical of wealthy “second son” families who migrated to Osceola County in the late 1800s, drawn by promises of natural bounty, beauty, a temperate climate, and commercial opportunity. Arthur Fell, a friend of the family, purchased 12,000 acres in the Narcoossee area from the Florida Land and Improvement Company, and Cadman eventually bought 10 acres of land, including 6 acres of orange groves, from the Fell & Davidson company for $3,000. In the Fell & Davidson settlement at Narcoossee, the English formed a close community and characteristically built their tennis courts first, to the surprise of an American nurseryman who later planted their orange groves. The Cadmans' home, fondly called the Bungalow, included the house kitchen, outhouse, stable and buggy house, a one-acre garden, and a citrus grove with 250 trees ready to bear fruit, while the yard was lush with bamboo and other tropical plants. Their possessions were shipped from England to Narcoossee in more than a steamboat full of furnishings. Once settled, the well-to-do family, including the older children, worked the Florida soil alongside hired laborers. Like many of the new English settlers in Narcoossee, they balanced work with recreation such as croquet, tennis, golf, and horseback riding, and William and Jane were known in the community for hosting parties, including elaborate Christmas Eve gatherings with Chinese lanterns, traditional English food, and champagne.
