In August 1814, after British raiders had destroyed nearby Georgetown the previous year while terrorizing Maryland's Eastern Shore, Kent County prepared for their return as they attempted to divert attention from their main operation against Baltimore. The British landed on August 30 and marched inland to meet the American militia at the Isaac Caulk farm. During the night attack, the Americans held their ground. British losses were heavy and included Captain Sir Peter Parker. The American victory in the Battle of Caulk's Field raised morale after the enemy's invasion of Washington, D.C.
