Near this spot, about 1730, David Page, the first settler of Fitchburg, built a garrison house in which he lived for several years. In 1761, Samuel Hunt opened the first public house here. In this tavern, in 1764, Fitchburg held its first town meeting, its first public religious services, and its first public school.
