Scott County covers 543 square miles and was formed in 1814 from Lee, Washington, and Russell counties. It was named for General Winfield Scott, later commander of the American Army, and contains the natural tunnel. Lee County covers 446 square miles and was formed in 1792 from Russell County. It was named for Henry (Light Horse Harry) Lee, a Revolutionary soldier and governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794. Daniel Boone's son was killed here by Indians.
