Founded for Philadelphia’s Centennial era and opened in 1877 as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, this institution grew from exposition objects and public gifts into one of the United States’ major art museums. Housed since 1928 in a monumental Greek temple-like building on Fairmount, it holds more than 240,000 objects across more than 2,000 years, with major strengths in European, American, and Asian art, decorative arts, period rooms, arms and armor, and modern art. Shaped by important benefactors and later expansions, it also oversees other sites and remains a major exhibition and educational center.
