Camp Columbia in Morris, Connecticut, occupies six hundred acres along Bantam Lake and combines public recreation with the remains of a former Columbia University engineering camp. Purchased in 1903 after years as farmland, the property served for about eighty years as a summer campus where students trained in engineering and surveying. During World War One, it also functioned as an officer-training ground, and remnants of its military trenches still survive. Most campus buildings have disappeared, but foundations, the Instrument House, and the Class of 1906 observation tower remain. Acquired by Connecticut in 2000 and dedicated in 2004, the site is now divided between state forest and state historic park.
