Camp Prince, known locally as Army Camp, was operated by the 1428th Engineer Float Bridge Company and opened around 1950 as a training and testing ground for the quick assembly of temporary floating bridges used for stream crossings of military equipment. Between 100 and 150 soldiers were stationed there at any one time, and each training session in bridge assembly lasted about six to eight weeks. Temporary bridge building ended in 1957, and the camp closed permanently in the early 1960's. Today, all that remains are a concrete water tank along the riverbank and the foundations and concrete floors of the 11 buildings used by the soldiers, and the site serves as a campground and day use area for fishing, picnicking, and relaxing in New River Gorge National River.
