Friendship Hill National Historic Site contains more than ten miles of hiking trails, including a loop trail system that offers a glimpse of the area when Albert Gallatin first settled it in the 1780s. Wildlife is abundant there, including fox, squirrels, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, pileated woodpeckers, and red-tailed hawks. Wildflowers, mountain laurel, and a variety of pines and hardwoods add to the park’s beauty. Along the trails, reminders of the past include the burial places of Albert Gallatin’s first wife, Sophia, and his friend and former business partner Thomas Clare, as well as old roads and building foundations that remain as evidence of Albert Gallatin and other enterprising individuals who passed through this land long ago.
