Quinnipiac River State Park in North Haven, Connecticut, is a public recreation area made up of four sections that protect about 6 miles of the Quinnipiac River in the heavily settled New Haven area. Established in 1948 from land left over after construction of the Wilbur Cross Parkway, it preserves a long stretch of river corridor and has supported hiking, canoeing, fishing, and hunting. A 4-mile section of the Quinnipiac Trail once crossed the park, but the route through the river’s active floodplain was abandoned because it proved impractical to maintain, and the trail’s southern terminus is now at Old Hartford Turnpike.
