For decades, construction debris from a growing industrial society filled the marshes and tide flats of the Albany Waterfront, forming an unsightly peninsula hidden from the main stream of urban life. In 1984 the dumping stopped. A wide path with spreading mounds of broken concrete and twisted reinforcing bar extended far into the San Francisco Bay, a testimony to modern society's disregard for its environment. Over time, nurtured by wind, rain, and sun, the Albany peninsula came to life. Grasses, plants, and trees took root and flourished, barren pits became verdant grottos, desolate shores became tranquil beaches and coves, small animals and birds found food and suitable habitat, and people rediscovered the wonders of nature.
