In this area, Benjamin F. Sheffer and Samuel K. Diehl formed a partnership in 1891 to sell agricultural implements, buggies, wagons, corn shellers, and other goods, then added a full line of hardware products in 1892. After Sheffer left in 1898, Diehl and William C. Hildebrand continued the business until January 1901, when Jacob F. Neuhaus purchased Diehl's interest and formed the Plano Hardware Company; in March 1901 Hildebrand sold his interests to J. F. Neuhaus, and in August 1901 H. Oscar Neuhaus joined the business, creating the partnership of J. F. and H. O. Neuhaus, which sold everything from feed and plows to dynamite. The store began selling John Deere tractors in 1929, and that same year Clara Hartley married Jacob's son Claire, moved to Glen Rock, and joined the family business, which became Neuhaus'es Inc. in 1952. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1921 after the neighboring Read Machine Shop caught fire, and it was rebuilt with I. Reindollar of York as contractor from plans by local architect Joseph Dise; after another fire damaged the building in 1926, local contractor M. L. McMillian handled the rebuilding. The family-run business and name were sold on September 26, 1989, ending a firm that had served the community from this general location from 1901 until its closing on November 3, 1990. In the fall of 1992 Glen Rock Borough bought the building for its own use, including as the new home of Glen Rock's library, which was dedicated on June 7, 1997. Clara Neuhaus, who worked in the business for more than sixty years, was Glen Rock's first librarian and served for twenty-six years. The old three-story structure built in 1921 was demolished in the fall of 2001, and the building that now houses The Arthur Hufnagel Public Library of Glen Rock was built circa 1957.
