The stables housed Anna's riding horses Polly and Bob, as well as Old Stevie. Anna bought Old Stevie, "an old hopeless stallion, starved and wretched," from a local farmer for $25 to serve as a model for Rocinante, Don Quixote's emaciated steed. Because he was so weak he could barely stand, she constructed a special sling to support him. Under Anna's care his health improved considerably, and after her model was finished she put him out to pasture.
