Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area near Reedsport on the Oregon coast is a protected wildlife management area jointly managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Bureau of Land Management. Known for a year-round herd of about 100 Roosevelt elk, it includes 1,040 acres of pasture, wetlands, and woodland. Elk have used this landscape since the 1930s, and changes from salt marsh to freshwater-fed grassland helped create reliable forage. In 1991, management shifted toward wildlife viewing and habitat protection, with the addition of the O.H. Hinsdale Interpretive Center, viewing platforms, and other facilities that also support observation of many wetland and woodland species.
