In Buffalo, New York, the Darwin D. Martin House is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most important Prairie School works, created between 1903 and 1905 as an integrated estate for Darwin D. Martin and his family rather than a single residence. The complex combined interconnected buildings, expansive open interiors, custom furniture, extensive art glass, and carefully planned grounds into a unified composition that Wright later considered among his finest achievements. After the Martins’ financial collapse following the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the property declined, was altered and partly demolished, then underwent a major restoration beginning in 1992. It now survives as a public museum and a leading example of Wright’s early architectural vision.
