Samuel Champlain depicted the 1604 Saint Croix Island colony in an idealized way, and archeological research has shown differences in the size and location of its buildings. Research on Saint Croix Island in 1789, 1949, and 1969 uncovered fragments from about thirty ceramic containers from Normandy.
