Fort Davis was named after Col. Benjamin F. "Grimes" Davis, a hero at Harpers Ferry in 1862 who was killed at the Battle of Brandy Station on June 9, 1863. During the Civil War, Washington's forts overlooked farm land, and the earthworks of Fort Davis remain visible behind the wooded area in front of the site.
