Fort Dupont Park is a 376-acre wooded park in Washington, D.C., whose name preserves Fort Dupont, a Civil War earthwork built in 1861, completed in 1862, and used through 1865 to help defend Washington’s eastern approaches from Confederate attack. Though armed with substantial artillery, the fort never saw hostile action, but it took part in the cannon salutes that followed the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House. The modern park was assembled in the 1930s and 1940s and is important both as open space and as part of the Anacostia watershed. It also serves as a major recreation area with concerts, programs, and roughly 10 miles of trails.
