Barrackville Covered Bridge in Barrackville, West Virginia, carries Pike Street over Buffalo Creek in a single 145-foot timber span that was unusually long for its era. Built in 1853 by noted bridge builder Lemuel Chenoweth, it uses a modified arched Burr truss that combines a multiple-kingpost truss with a strengthening arch. The bridge’s enclosed siding was added about twenty years later. Its importance rests on both its engineering and its survival as a significant example of 19th-century bridge construction in West Virginia. In 1981, it was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Chenoweth’s bridge-building legacy.
