The O.K. Corral was a livery and horse corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, operating from 1879 to about 1888 and serving everyday travel needs during the town’s mining boom. In 1881 it was one of eight such businesses in a town of about 5,300 people. Its lasting fame comes from the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, though the shooting actually began on a nearby narrow lot on Fremont Street, not inside the corral. The confrontation arose from enforcement of Tombstone’s weapons ordinance. Although the original corral burned in 1882, its later association with the shootout helped preserve the site and strengthen Tombstone’s frontier legend.
