At the site now underwater, the last significant Civil War skirmish east of the Mississippi River occurred on April 29, 1865. A U.S. force under Capt. S. M. Overby was driven back after attacking about 140 Confederates from the Army of Northern Virginia under Col. L. A. Sypert. Both sides suffered casualties, and supplies were captured. By May 6, most of the Confederates had been killed or captured.
