Mount Davidson, at 928 feet, is San Francisco’s highest natural point and one of its original Seven Hills, giving its name to the surrounding neighborhood and anchoring views from the city’s west side. Its history reaches from the raising of the American flag there after news of Robert E. Lee’s surrender in 1865 to Adolph Sutro’s purchase of the land in 1881 and later development of nearby neighborhoods. The summit’s defining landmark, a 103-foot concrete cross completed in 1934, became a center for Easter services, Armenian genocide remembrance, broadcasting, film, and a long legal battle that ended with the summit parcel’s sale in 1997.
