Palmer Glacier on Mount Hood’s south slopes in Oregon is now classified as a snowfield after its ice stopped moving in the mid-1980s. Extending from about 9,300 to 6,200 feet, it was named for Oregon pioneer Joel Palmer and was long known as Mount Hood’s best-known glacier because it supports the mountain’s extended snowsports season. Much of its lower section lies within the Timberline ski area, helping make this the only place in North America with skiing and snowboarding available in every month of the year. Once a larger ice-age remnant, Palmer was recognized as a glacier in 1924 before later retreat and stagnation ended its active status.
