Built in 1852 in downtown Columbus, the Kelton House is a Greek Revival and Italianate home whose history connects domestic life in 19th-century Columbus with major social causes and later design work. Fernando and Sophia Kelton were abolitionists, and their house served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Their son Oscar fought in the Civil War and was killed in 1864, and that same year Martha Hartway, a young runaway slave from Virginia, joined the household. Passed down through generations, the home was later associated with suffrage and interior design, and it preserves an unusually large share of original family furnishings.
