Bell built 1,116 AH-1 Cobras for the U.S. Army between 1967 and 1973. The Cobras served as attack helicopters and logged over a million operational hours in Vietnam. This AH-1F Cobra, tail number 67-15624, was purchased in May 1968. The AH-1F modification was the latest of numerous improvements to the AH-1H and was known as a Modernized Cobra. It flew with the 5th Air Cavalry in the 44th Special Tactical Zone near the Cambodian border until the end of the Vietnam War. Before 2004 it was at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. Its crew was two, one pilot and one co-pilot-gunner. It measured 53 feet with both rotors turning, with a rotor diameter of 44 feet, a height of 13 feet 6 inches, and a fuselage length of 44 feet 5 inches. Its maximum takeoff weight was 9,500 pounds. It was powered by one Lycoming R53-L-13 turbo shaft rated at 1,100 shp. Its maximum speed was 171 miles per hour and its range was 357 miles. Its armament included 7.62 miniguns, 40mm grenade launchers, 2.75 aerial rockets, and a 20mm cannon.
