Natchez National Historical Park includes the William Johnson House site, consisting of the Johnson home and kitchen and the adjoining McCallum House; Johnson, born enslaved in 1809, was freed at age eleven and later became a successful businessman, slaveholder, and diarist in Natchez. It also includes Melrose Estate, an 1840s mansion that was home to lawyer and plantation owner John T. McMurran and his family from 1849 to 1865, with several original outbuildings including slave cabins. The park also preserves the site of Fort Rosalie, a fort constructed by the French in 1716 that passed from French to British to Spanish and ultimately to American control.
