Reedy Creek Site in Halifax County, Virginia, near South Boston, preserves evidence of repeated Native occupation from the Late Archaic period, about 2000 to 1000 B.C., through a village occupation between about 900 and 1400 A.D. Excavations revealed burials, pottery, settlement remains, and signs that the village was fortified late in its history with a palisade. Archaeologists found nine graves, pottery from the Clements and Clarksville series, and plant and animal remains that illuminate diet and daily life before European contact. Together, these findings make the site an important source for understanding long-term Native settlement and subsistence in southern Virginia.
