Bicknell lies in Rabbit Valley at 7,125 feet elevation, surrounded by rugged mountains, hills, massive ledges, and canyons, with the Fremont River running through pastures below town. Fish Lake Mountain on the north, Thousand Lake Mountain on the northeast, and Boulder Mountain on the south are each about 11,000 feet, while Parker Mountain on the west rises to 9,820 feet, and the Ant Hill on the east stands out as a distinct landmark. Paleo-Indians were the first inhabitants of this area several thousand years ago, living in caves and using pointed projectiles to hunt animals. Beginning about 2000 years ago, the Fremont and the Anasazi, or Ancestral Puebloan, people moved into the area as hunter-gatherers who also incorporated farming, community living, and pit houses as they became less nomadic. About the year 1400, the Ute and Paiute tribes, speakers of Numic languages, occupied the region and were present when early explorers and Mormon pioneers came to Wayne County.
