THE STORY

Fort Pownall was erected and named by Gen. Thomas Pownall in 1759. Gen. Samuel Waldo, for whom Waldo County was named, was buried here and later removed to Kings Chapel, Boston. The site was associated in 1916 with the John Cocran Chapter D.A.R.
