Hardscrabble Mountain is a 3,171-metre summit in Colorado’s Wet Mountains, part of the Sangre de Cristo Range in the Rocky Mountains, near Wetmore. South Hardscrabble Park lies to its south and Hardscrabble Pass to the west-southwest. Local legend ties the mountain’s name to Christmas Day 1855, when Ute Native Americans attacked settlers in Pueblo and soldiers chased them up the creek in a struggle remembered as a “hard scrabble” to avoid capture. The mountain also gives rise to several streams bearing the same name, including North, Middle, and South Hardscrabble creeks and South Fork North Hardscrabble Creek.
