In 1880, Silver Cliff and the surrounding area had 350 mines, including Colorado's deepest silver mine, the Geyser Mine. Today, 587 people live there above a tangle of mines and tunnels. Lead, silver, and gold were once abundant but are now mainly mined out. The Silver Cliff Cemetery is a gathering place, especially on dark, rainy, overcast nights when clouds cover the mountains, as groups come hoping to see the lights, and Haunted Past Tours honor the men and women who died doing dangerous mining work. In the 1950s through 1970s, George Draper drew movie and television production companies through the state film office, and Hollywood featured the Sangre de Cristos in films including Cat Ballou, Comes a Horseman, Saddle the Wind, Zebulon Pike, The Blue Mountain, How the West Was Won, True Grit, and Continental Divide.
