In the Chihuahuan Desert of southeast New Mexico, high ancient sea ledges, deep rocky canyons, flowering cactus, and desert wildlife rise above a hidden landscape of more than 119 caves formed when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone and left behind caverns of all sizes. Carlsbad Caverns National Park has hot summers with temperatures between 90°F (32°C) and low 100s °F (38°C), windy conditions and mild temperatures in early spring, frequent rain in early fall, and cold winter temperatures with occasional snow and icy conditions, while most days bring a blue sky with very few clouds and 278 sunny days each year.
