The Guadalupe Mountains rise to the southwest from the Pecos River Valley, with higher southern peaks reaching 8,750 feet. Their bold escarpment is formed of the famous Capitan limestone, an ancient reef similar to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and it is associated with Carlsbad Caverns as well as deep petroleum and underground water. The elevation here is 3,270 feet.
