Pine Log Mountain, a 2,338-foot summit in north Georgia near Waleska, anchors a range that includes some of the last Appalachian peaks over 2,000 feet in this part of the state before the mountains drop lower toward Alabama. Much of the range lies within the Pine Log Wildlife Management Area, making it an important forest refuge near metropolitan Atlanta and a rare meeting point of the Blue Ridge, Piedmont, and Ridge and Valley ecoregions. Its streams, bogs, and higher slopes support endangered fish, rare plants, and red crossbills. The area also preserves a long history of iron and manganese mining, Civil War movement, ghost towns, and a Woodland-era Native American site.
