The Cedars Natural Area Preserve in Lee County, Virginia, protects a distinctive limestone karst landscape near the Powell River and the rare plants and animals adapted to it. Established in 1996 through an initial purchase by The Nature Conservancy and transferred the following year to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, it has grown to 2,265 acres, including additional river frontage acquired with a 2015 state grant. Its rugged terrain of thin soils, sinkholes, caves, losing streams, glades, and woodlands supports an unusual concentration of rare species, including habitat for the uncommon loggerhead shrike and the endangered Lee County cave isopod.
