The Sonora Mono Road, located 100 feet west, began as a toll road in the mid 1860’s and remained so until the state took it over in 1901. It was built to provide a route between Sonora and Bodie. Under state franchise, tolls did not exceed 3 dollars for a horse or mule and rider, 6 dollars for a stage, 5 dollars for a buggy, 50 cents for cows, and 25 cents for sheep. An adjacent spring watered stock. Alfred Fuller, father of Chief William Fuller, served as toll collector. Many streets and roads were named after the Fuller family. A barn that housed the toll collector’s office later became the first Waltz home, which burned in 1980 and was since rebuilt on the present site.
