Yankee Stadium in the Bronx opened in April 2009 as the home of the New York Yankees, replacing the team’s celebrated 1923 ballpark one block to the south. Built on the former site of Macombs Dam Park after a decades-long push for a new stadium, it was designed to evoke the original through features such as its limestone exterior, updated frieze, familiar field dimensions, Great Hall, and relocated Monument Park. The project drew controversy because of its high cost, public subsidies, and loss of parkland, yet it became one of the nation’s most prominent sports venues and the site of the Yankees’ 2009 World Series championship.
