On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four planes. Two were flown into the World Trade Center Towers, leading to their collapse. One was flown onto the Pentagon. The other crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The attack killed 2,999 victims, including 92 Massachusetts residents. Among those remembered is Melissa Harrington-Hughes, born May 29, 1970, who died on September 11, 2001, alongside words defining success as laughing often and much; winning the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; earning the appreciation of honest critics and enduring the betrayal of false friends; appreciating beauty and finding the best in others; leaving the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; and knowing that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
