Once known as China Graveyard Ridge, this site became a racetrack by late August, 1871, when Alex Love developed a track 550 yards in length. The popular quarter mile track featured horses such as Hayfork Kitty and Hollywood, owned by John Van Matre, while Mart Van Matre became famous there with his winning horses, and Charlie Daniels, a local Indian, was popular with his palomino. Horse fanciers and enthusiasts came for decades to watch the races, but by the 1920’s racing had been discontinued. On April 18, 1928, the Journal announced the opening of a 400X1800 airport on the old race track site, and Weaverville’s Moon Lee, the first Trinity pilot, landed there during a celebration on the previous Sunday. The airport remained in use until the present field was completed in 1953. Lumberman and visionary Vic Rose bought the property in 1954, and in 1975 Rose and Felix Claveron reached a deal to begin the golf course, which opened February 4, 1976.
