Built before 1767 by Richard Tubman II, St. Mary, Star of the Sea Chapel served Roman Catholics who had worshipped in this area since the second half of the 17th century. The site includes early unmarked burial vaults. The chapel was enlarged in 1819 and again in 1868, then suppressed and sold in 1874 when a new church was built nearby. In 1961 Joseph and Dorothy Belfiore deeded it back to the congregation, and in 1976 Rev. Edward B. Carley restored it largely through the generosity of Annita Applegarth France, a descendant of Richard Tubman.
