Whitecap Mountains is a long-running ski resort in Upson, Wisconsin, in the Penokee Range about 16 miles south of Lake Superior. Covering 400 acres with 43 runs, it offers terrain for a wide range of skiers and has operated since the 1960s. Its identity has been shaped by its upland setting near Lake Superior, which has supported its claim of being Wisconsin’s snowiest ski area and given it a more mountainous character than many Midwestern ski hills. After a January 2019 fire destroyed the main lodge, it stayed open as owners planned rebuilding. In 2025, financial strain tied to very low snowfall led to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.
