At this location, Simon Koller built a sawmill in 1832 and operated it until 1837, when he sold his farm on March 31 to William Heathcote, a young Englishman who built a woolen mill beside the sawmill. The sawmill ceased operating before 1880, and in 1880 the Glen Rock Chair Works opened in the sawmill building. In 1885 Israel Glatfelter purchased what had become the Glen Rock Flour Mill property, expanding business interests that had begun with a tailoring business in 1871. In May 1893 he cleared out the foundation of the old Koller sawmill to build a new clothing store, which opened in December and introduced large glass display windows to the town. In 1903 Glatfelter sold to Joe Miller, who opened the Water Street Clothing Store. In 1906 Walter L. Seigman and E. Oscar Wherley bought Miller's stock and began Seigman and Wherley's, a business that sold clothing, hats, shoes, gents' furnishings and goods, as well as car parts, gasoline, bicycles, motorcycles, guns, ammunition, and more. Between 1908 and 1918 they served as agents for Ford and Maxwell cars, and in 1913 they helped organize the Glen Rock Motor club. After Edwin Oscar Wherley's death in 1946, his son Frank and daughter-in-law Clare became owners of the property and business. On November 30, 1996, the business ended after carrying the Wherley name for ninety years, including forty years under E. Oscar Wherley and fifty under Frank and Clare Wherley.
