Grassy Lake Wildlife Management Area is a 12,983-acre protected tract in northern Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, in the Red River floodplain east of Bordelonville. With limited land access and additional approach by water, it remains a relatively remote landscape of flat, poorly drained alluvial ground. Smith Bay, Grassy Lake, Lake Chenier, Red River Bay, and Bayou Natchitoches shape a swampy riverine setting that supports bottomland hardwood forest and wet-ground vegetation. That habitat sustains swamp rabbits, deer, squirrels, wild turkey, woodcock, waterfowl, alligators, and fish such as largemouth bass, crappie, and bream. Major flooding in March 2018 temporarily closed the area, underscoring its close tie to the river.
