Boston’s Freedom Trail is a 2.5-mile walking route linking 16 sites associated with the early history of the United States, running from Boston Common through downtown and the North End to Charlestown. Conceived in 1951 by journalist William Schofield and implemented by Mayor John Hynes, it quickly became a popular way to connect major colonial and Revolutionary landmarks in a single path. The route includes sites such as the Old North Church, Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere House, the USS Constitution, and the Bunker Hill Monument, while also serving as a broader civic framework for interpreting Boston’s public history as it continues to evolve.
