Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg, Illinois preserves the author's birthplace and boyhood home, centered on the cottage where he was born. Operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Division, it includes a visitor center, museum, shop, small theater, and the rock beneath which Sandburg and his wife Lilian are buried, making it both a literary museum and a memorial place. Its emphasis is Sandburg's early life in Galesburg, while his later North Carolina home is preserved separately. Closed in 2008 because of state budget cuts, it reopened in April 2009 and remains Galesburg's main place connected to his childhood and legacy.
