Carl Sandburg, born in 1878 in the adjacent three-room cottage and raised in Galesburg, became a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Lincoln biographer. The Illinois prairie landscape of his childhood provided imagery for his writings, including prose, poems, and children's stories. His book Rootabaga Stories was written for his three daughters, and The American Songbag collected American folk tunes that are still taught to children today.
