Butch Cassidy, born Robert Leroy Parker in Beaver, Utah, was the oldest of 13 children of Mormon immigrants and became one of the most legendary figures associated with this remote and rugged country. While still in his teens, he took up cattle rustling and then armed robbery, and in the 1890s he formed The Wild Bunch, a gang that included Harry Longabaugh, better known as The Sundance Kid. Though an outlaw for much of his life, his charisma and reputation as a champion of the common man gave him heroic stature in American folklore. Stories about his colorful life blend fact and fiction, and the circumstances of his death remain especially debated, with some believing he was shot in Bolivia in 1908 while many local residents recalled seeing him years later, supporting a different account that he gave up crime, changed his name, and died in 1937. His legend remains closely tied to Red Canyon, where the Cassidy Trail is believed to have been used by him, and to the cabin near Circleville where he was raised.
